MOTIS (Modular Transport Infrastructure System) is a flexible set of standard structural elements that are used to create structures, shelters and signs, presented alongside a suite of complementary street furniture and lighting.
Design
All MOTIS elements share a single design direction. This coordination allows a consistent project style to be developed, whilst a clear aesthetic and material relationship between the products in the family reduces street clutter.
A modular system of standard parts combines in limitless permutations to create cantilevered and gull-wing shelters, waiting rooms, and retail, ticket or information kiosks. Components may be finished in their natural state or painted for location identity whilst ensuring budgetary restrictions are met. They can also be clad with an attractive suite of aluminium profiles for enhanced appearance and utility. These cladding profiles act as ducts for power or data cables, locations for integrated lighting and signage and can protect the vulnerable areas of structures from vandalism.
A vital requirement of transport infrastructures is that all ancillary items integrate with and complement the structures. As such, MOTIS offers a variety of built in and standalone luminaires and in addition it can allow for integrated traditional and digital signage systems to assist travellers with wayfinding and passenger information.
Materials
A series of steel channel sections form the structural basis of MOTIS and is finished for maximum service life and may be painted to project scheme colours. Toughened glass, composite panels, anodised aluminium, stainless steel, and vitreous enamel feature within the range and all materials and finishes have been selected to maximise aesthetic impact over the structure life and to minimise the effects of vandalism.
Why MOTIS?
Successful public transport systems require the delivery of safety, information and comfort to passengers throughout their journey. To achieve this, the quality of the infrastructure must equal that of the vehicles. Most existing transport facilities fall well short of this aim, exhibiting a distinct lack of planning and an all too evident chaos of styles and materials. The only exceptions are those few projects where bespoke designs have been commissioned – usually at significant expense.
Woodhouse developed MOTIS with these specific challenges in mind, allowing the specification of cost effective, high-quality tailored facilities from a set of standard components. The result is a flexible system that offers style, practicality and functionality at a known cost and with a shorter manufacturing programme than bespoke designs that are also not co-ordinated with other complimentary elements in the urban landscape.
