The PEDRA NEGRA litterbin emerged from a project to define suitable elements for natural environments like the black sand beaches in the Canary Islands. The aim was to make them become timeless components of the landscape. PEDRA NEGRA seeks to penetrate, understand and reinterpret the landscape, and turn the elements into contours in the land, like a rocky promontory that is chiselled to meet the requirements of its surroundings.
The material aspect of this bin, which was subsequently given different colours of concrete treated as stone, is also an essential part of its content. In the landscape, this litter bin becomes a hermetic landmark, without reflections, embedded and stranded in the sand, influenced by its natural movement.
It requires no anchorage or footing. It has a smoke black colour stainless steel door for access to the cubicle holding a plastic container, suitable for use with or without a litter collection bag.
PEDRA NEGRA was designed for Escofet in 2002 by architects Antonio Montes and Enric Pericas.
