The CERDÁ tree surround is a square unit in reinforced cast stone.
It is built with a perimeter frame composed of four concrete blocks that mark the boundary and the transition between the pavement and the tree, with two interior grates to surround the tree and protect the space inside the frame, leaving a 45 cm diameter gap.
These grates include perforations in the concrete to facilitate watering and ventilation and prevent the soil from compacting. The texture has been designed as an allegory of the city street grid in Barcelona's Ensanche district, sliced by the Diagonal Avenue.
Architects Segi Godia, María Pilar Lavilla and Josep Urgell designed CERDÁ in 1991 in conjunction with Escofet as a tribute to engineer Ildefonso Cerdá, author of the Ensanche project and others in Barcelona.
