Challenge
Clear wayfinding in Cambridge with narrow winding streets, alleyways and dead ends in a contemporary style yet blends with an area of distinct heritage.
Approach
Co-ordinated map nodes and finger posts to get pedestrians from A to B with the minimum of fuss. Campus was ideally suited because of its narrow double-sided monoliths.
Result
Original and well suited signage that compliments its historic environment.

Cambridge City Centre Signage
The centre of Cambridge is largely organised on a medieval street plan, with narrow winding streets and alleyways, and many 'dead ends'. Good signage and orientation is therefore vital and the modular Campus system from Woodhouse has been developed to satisfy their complex needs.
To add to the challenge, the signage needed to be contemporary yet suit an historic setting. It didn't take a Cambridge degree to realise that Campus was an ideal choice. The finger posts and node structure have a bronze, anodised aluminium finish, to match the city's lighting columns while the bottom section of the node panel has an insert of local Ketton stone. The double-sided monoliths are narrow, and so perfect for cramped pavements. Each single panel has two maps; the immediate city area, within 10 minutes walking distance, plus the wider city context, and a list of marked destination points. In this way the nodes create a series of wayfinding 'stepping stones'. The nodes are interspersed with finger posts which reinforce the chosen route.
Campus is a popular choice with UK architects, town planners and landscape designers. The monolith nodes are standard across the range, but can be customised to offer infinite combinations of map and signage materials and finishes. The map and signage panels are tough, durable vitreous enamel, although Woodhouse can also offer an internally illuminated glass version to extend their night time visibility.
